Royal
Shakespeare Theatre
Waterside, Stratford-upon-Avon
The first theatre to be built in honour of Shakespeare, it was opened
in Stratford in 1879. Most of this building was destroyed by fire in 1926,
but a successful fund-raising appeal enabled the Shakespeare Memorial
Theatre, designed by Elisabeth Scott, to open in 1932. It became the Royal
Shakespeare Theatre in 1961, and is one of the most famous theatres in
the world. The Courtyard Theatre is currently the Company’s main theatre while the RST is closed for a major transformation project.
The
Swan Theatre
Waterside, Stratford-upon-Avon
An Elizabethan style galleried playhouse built inside the original theatre. Opened in 1986, it stages the plays of Shakespeare and his contemporaries. As part of the transformation of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, the Swan will close from August 2007.
The
Courtyard Theatre
Southern Lane, Stratford-upon-Avon
Built on the site of The Other Place, The Courtyard Theatre is the RSC's new performance space with a thrust stage and seating for 1000 people. The theatre has already become hugely popular with audiences and actors alike. The shape and scale of the auditorium is similar to that proposed for the transformed Royal Shakespeare Theatre and is now the Company's main theatre whilst the RST is closed for transformation.
